Calling all history and food lovers! The first-ever Heritage Culinary Tour is set to kick off September 10th and 11th in Durham Region.
With just one passport, the Heritage Culinary Tour will take you to four of the most majestic historic sites in the region, giving you an extensive inside look at houses built more than a century ago. It will also allow you to walk through breathtaking, landscaped gardens and to taste of some of the finest gourmet foods the GTA has to offer.
The four historic sites opening their doors for the weekend tour include Parkwood National Historic Site, (Oshawa), Garden of Eden (Whitby), The Heritage House (Ajax), and the Pickering Museum Village (Pickering).
The Heritage Culinary Tour is also the kick-off event for Savour the Season, a 10-day culinary experience featuring 29 of Durham’s best casual and fine dining restaurants as well as over 35 local growers and producers. It was designed to showcase local growers, producers and chefs, providing fresh-from-the-farm choices to consumers and supporting the local economy.
Kerri King, Tourism Manager for the Regional Municipality of Durham, says she is pleased the two events are working together to help showcase the vast culinary delights as well as the historic beauty of the region. “This is a great example of a collaborative effort that helps showcase Durham as a unique tourist destination,” she says.
Each location will feature its own unique appetizers, all of them prepared by chef Cathy Brown and her team in the kitchens of Heritage House Catering. The menu for the tour will feature 10 gourmet appetizers.
Passports for the HCT are set at $49 per person and $79 per couple. There is an option a special overnight package at The Holiday Inn Express (Whitby). The tour runs Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the exception of the Pickering Museum Village, which is open Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 12 to 3 p.m.
This inaugural culinary tour has been set up to recognize the 100th anniversary of the stately Heritage House, on Kingston Road in Pickering Village, Ajax Ontario, owned by Cathy Brown and Eugene Dupuis. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way of celebrating this milestone than to share some of our gourmet cuisine while inviting guests to tour the house and gardens of this magnificent property, a Pickering Village landmark and momentous piece of Durham Region’s history,” says Ms Brown.
